In this 80-minute recorded virtual workshop, we introduce educational equity — what it is, why we need it, and how we can reach it.
To transform education, we must create an equitable educational system. This workshop talks about systemic barriers students from traditionally marginalized and minoritized face, and what we can do to remove those barriers and supplant them with supports.
Student success is at the heart of all of our efforts as educators. However, to fully serve each of our students, we must understand the barriers preventing them from reaching their full potential. Educational equity is an effort to give everyone what they need to succeed and an explicit effort to level the playing field to reach equality. In this recorded virtual workshop, participants examined some of the barriers students face and reflected on what they can do to reduce barriers and provide support.
Objective
Equip participants with a shared vocabulary for understanding and employing educational equity principles.
Learning Objectives
- Engage participants in exercises that expand awareness of educational equity issues.
- Empower participants to reflect on what they can control and influence to improve educational equity for every student.
About the Recording
This session was a two-and-a-half-hour virtual workshop for 100 elementary school participants. For the client, we held two identical sessions for ~100 high school educators and ~100 middle school educators.
To make virtual sessions interactive and engaging, we employ multiple teaching techniques. With years of experience doing so, we’ve honed strategies for helping participants understand tasks and model in various ways how to navigate the technologies before moving into breakout groups. We monitor breakout room progress. These pauses have been trimmed from the recording
