About Engineer Inclusion

Engineer Inclusion is a fast-growing boutique consulting firm that provides keynote speaking, consulting, professional development, and organizational change services. Our clients range across the education spectrum, industry, social services, and more.

Engineer Inclusion founder Dr. Meagan Pollock began her career playing with light projection on tiny microscopic mirrors as an engineer for Texas Instruments. In 2008, Meagan shifted her focus from widgets to workshops and began teaching, speaking, and writing about diversity, equity, and inclusion. She now utilizes metaphorical projectors and mirrors to shine a light on micro and macro social systems that, when adjusted, improve student, employee, and organizational success.

Drawing on multiple skillsets, Engineer Inclusion helps people intentionally and systematically engineer equity and inclusion into their organizations: driving positive outcomes and effectively supporting employees and the community. Leveraging engineering thinking, process improvement, and research-based inclusion strategies, Engineer Inclusion is uniquely equipped to help people and organizations reach their diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.

Our growth

With over a decade of experience consulting, in the fall of 2019, I (Meagan) decided to trust in my vision and went to work for myself full-time. In February 2020, the Engineer Inclusion brand came to life, and in March, it became a registered “DBA” of my company, 7E Ventures LLC. Due to the events of that year, I did not formally launch the brand until the fall, and the business has been growing since. My TEDx talk came out in December of 2021, giving the company a surge and expansion across industries.

So far, I’ve managed all parts of the business, including web and graphic design, customer relations, communications, content creation, accounting, and service delivery. After significant reflection, I realized that where I need help most is with communications.

Our Direction

Two years from now, I envision:

Engineer Inclusion will be a team of 5 people.

We will remain a small but mighty, fast and agile team with the following projected roles.
Employee 1: Meagan Pollock
Employee 2: Communications Manager
Employee 3: Research Manager
Employee 4: Business Development Manager
Employee 5: Program Manager

We will be creating and facilitating new programs that serve hundreds of thousands of people annually.

We will be publishing valuable work and research that serves our mission, equipping people with tools, resources, community, and support to lead systemic change.

Our team will be internationally recognized as a leader in organizational change within the fields of engineering and technology.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement a communications strategy.

SITUATION:

As a small business owner managing all parts of the business, my strategy has been to share what I create, try to remember to share what I am doing, and to create opportunities to build community with people interested in learning more. I have a lot on my plate; thus as a result, my social media presence is haphazard, inconsistent, and not very social. My mailing list can go for weeks at a time without receiving an update from me. Ultimately, communication is usually an afterthought.

GOALS:

  • Ascertain the most effective social media channels for the business, create a strategy, and deliver regular content that drives engagement with my resources and services.
  • Create an email strategy that consistently adds value to people’s lives and work and converts people to customers.

Co-host all virtual programming as a super savvy and helpful Zoom producer.

SITUATION:

When I remember to get back up, they are great at helping to manage the details while I focus on teaching. However, my current Zoom producers aren’t always available! Plus, I sometimes get months behind converting recordings and getting them posted. Also, I don’t follow up with participants in a consistent way that would benefit their learning.

GOALS:

  • Have a built-in teammate that attends all virtual workshops, serves as a Zoom producer, takes notes for feedback on improving my delivery and services, shares on social media, and offers recommendations for follow-up with participants, etc.
  • Manage all video editing, captioning, uploading, and sharing processes.
  • Create a strategy for participant follow-up that reinforces learning and engagement.

Maximize our existing content portfolio to create rich bite-sized, sharable elements that help people learn.

SITUATION:

I have a lot of content! A lot of it makes it to my website, which I do myself, but some things I create for workshops never see the light of day if I don’t get it processed into a usable format and posted quickly. Videos from Zoom-recorded sessions usually make it onto Youtube. However, the captions aren’t done properly, the descriptions are too short, and I am not making the most of that content by making short, shareable elements that direct people back to my website.

GOALS:

  • Curate bite-sized content that helps people learn and showcases our work.
  • Assess and organize our portfolio of content that makes it easy to find and share topical elements.

Contribute to Engineer Inclusion's future by acting as a thought partner and collaborator on projects.

SITUATION:

I’ve been a one-woman show for a long time.

GOALS:

  • Serve as a valuable sounding board for ideas and potential projects. 
  • Present observations from the website, email, and social media analytics that suggest promising next steps and directions for content and services.
  • Assist in ongoing projects to meet client deliverables.
  • Bring in clients and work!

From Yvon Choinard, Patagonia’s founder and owner, this policy allows employees to “catch a good swell, go bouldering for an afternoon, pursue an education, or get home in time to greet the kids when they come down from the school bus.” I treat my time like this and yours, too.
  • If I’m not careful, I will take on all the tasks, perhaps the curse of an overachiever/solo-preneuer. I’ll need you to not let me do that. Tell me when you’ve got it.
  • I love feedback. It’s how we grow and improve. I always want you to feel safe to give me feedback, and if you don’t, let’s talk about why.

Who's the right candidate?

  • I envision the hours to be 20-30 hours a week to start, potentially more based on your initiative and the value you bring to the company. (The more business that comes in, the faster I can get you to full-time employed status if you want it.)
  • The hours are flexible outside of contracted virtual workshops.
  • I’m looking for someone accustomed to working from a home office. It’s not for everyone.
  • I’m not looking for a consultant who does this type of work for many companies. I want someone solely focused on Engineer Inclusion’s vision and mission.
  • I’m looking for someone willing to grow with me. While the position will initially be as a 1099 contractor, my goal is to use that as a trial period before making a formal offer of employment. Since this will be my company’s first employee, I want to ensure I get it right and get things in order to offer a benefits package (like insurance and retirement) down the road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything is negotiable, but I am a small business with a budget. Realistically, to start off, I need to stay within the set range. Pay will be commensurate with experience. We can renegotiate terms as you grow into the role and the business grows. 

I am willing to give earned bonuses as a supplement. We can negotiate the terms.

No. Relevant work experience works for me. But if you have one or more, that works, too!

If you are sick, you take the time you need. If you want to take time off, you do it. We get the job done, and live life the best we can, too.

More specifically, I subscribe to the “let my people surfing” mentality. As a contractor, it’s customary for you to have one, but if you need one, sure, I can provide a Macbook that will be the property of the company. 

Not necessarily. It would be good for us to meet in person occasionally, but we can work that out.

Yes. I’ll provide an easy-to-use app that allows you to track the time you are working in real-time.

No. My goal is to be able to bring this role on as a full-time W-2 employee with insurance and retirement benefits by 2024.
